In Delaware, children aged five to sixteen are required to attend a public school, homeschool, or other non-public educational option. The Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) supports Delaware’s public schools, comprising 19 school districts and 23 charter schools, by providing resources, professional development, grant access, and more to ensure all students are prepared for success in college, careers, and life.
Additionally, the DDOE oversees educator licensure and certification, registers home schools, and manages adult and prison education programs, among other responsibilities outlined in Delaware Code. Education policies, laws, and regulations in Delaware are often developed in collaboration with local educators and stakeholders, the State Board of Education, the Professional Standards Board, and the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA).
